Many people
deal with anxiety differently, depending on what it stressing them out like
economic issues, family, or personal issues. Men and women from different
social economic status may cope with it differently and have different
struggles.
It seems like
people who are better off in society, don't have anxiety issues, could be true.
In reality with the significant amount of money they may have, they are upset
with their life and may be wondering where there life is going. (Money can't
buy happiness) Wealthy people's anxiety may seem silly to us, they are worried
about love, family, or their job. Some will say they don't feel financially
secure. (silly right?) You don't hear
about the wealthy complain about their struggles because to you and I, it'll sound
like they're complaining. They're not worried about what they will eat for
dinner or the next day, like a non-wealthy person. They're more concerned about
the quality of their fine steak or lobster. With all the money they have, they
also worry about what else can they buy? "I have everything!" They
have their million dollar yacht, home, cars, jet. At this point they can either
keep upgrading or buy more of.
For others
their anxiety can lead to depression, eating disorders, cheating, or stealing.
Yes stealing, the wealthy have millions of dollars that they may not even have
any excitement in their lives and the only way they will get a rush is to
steal. They can even turn to alcohol and
drugs, especially common for the younger generation who we might consider them
as the bratty, spoiled rich kids.
If anyone is
aware of E!'s reality TV show, Rich Kids it follows the life of kids who are in
there late 20's that are rich, but are only rich because of their parents and
are set for life. Yes when we watch the
show were envious of what they have and how they live their life. But at the
end of the day there just like us, they have problems, they may not be happy at
time or insecure but are able to fix that with a swipe of their credit card.
But how do
the wealthy cope with anxiety? They can keep buying expensive items and try to
be happy. But in reality they can afford the medicine to calm them, the psychiatrist, a vacation getaway,
(wouldn't that be nice?) They have the money to cope with their anxiety problems,
unlike the poor.
Now what
about the people who actually have "real" problems to worry about as
we would like to say. What gives the men and women who are in poverty anxiety?
These people struggle, living paycheck by paycheck, wondering when they're next
meal will be, if they have enough money for rent. The people in poverty have
real problems to deal with in their life. Just like the wealthy, these anxiety
problems lead to depression, suicide, drugs, eating disorders, mental problems.
The list can go on!
They certainly cannot afford a luxurious trip
across the world, or buy the new iPhone 6 just because its "new." Due
to the lack of money people in poverty cannot pay for medicine to help them
with their anxiety, or set an appointment with a psychiatrist. Sad to say that they
can get their hands on illegal drugs to ease the pain that they are struggling
in life, they can even steal alcohol. Which may lead to drug abuse and become
alcoholics.
Single mom's
in poverty neighborhoods, have anxiety trying to take care of her children,
making sure their child is warm, and has food on the table for them. Maybe the
mother is so busy working two jobs to provide for her kids, that it could
possibly effect the children and cause them to be in gangs, or drug abuse.
These mothers are the ones that really have anxiety, who are just trying to eat
and not worrying about their status in society like a wealthy person.
There's
different type of anxieties, not just for the wealthy and the poor, but I'm
sure families who are in middle class and college students. Researches stated,
"that decrease in income is associated with increased risk of
anxiety." I believe if we have a problem with anxiety we can figure out a
way to not sweat the small stuff, like worrying that you can't afford a
Starbucks coffee today, or can't get your nails done. Those are things that
don't matter. As long as we have food and a roof over our heads, that's all
that matters.

After reading this post, I agree with what was being stated. Those who have money do not have the same sense of anxiety as those who are less fortunate. Everyone get anxiety for different reasons and everyone handles anxiety differently. But those who are struggling with life and dealing with an overwhelming amount of stress tend to from lower-income families. This is because people who are considered “wealthy” can just swipe their credit cards for happiness again. There are many people in this society today that cannot afford their medicine to control their anxiety. Although there are many people today who take anxiety pills, I know situations occur where those prescribed to the drug are selling them to get more of an income and say “happiness”. Like Lilibeth said in the post, “money cannot buy you happiness”, I have come to think that sometimes money does buy you happiness for a short amount of time until something negative appears back into your life. This is why so many college students like to come home from school, they can go shopping with their mom or dad and spend more, because new things make life better and clear some of the stress causing their anxiety.
ReplyDeleteDealing with anxiety can be a tough thing. I had a friend who suffered from anxiety and had a really difficult time overcoming her anxiety and how she handled it. Everyday it can be something different that is causing stress, or worrying, or discomfort. Little things that you want in life should not make the world stop because you cannot afford it or have the time to go. Like in the post, not being able to afford getting your nails done shouldn’t cause your life to become a disaster. It is more important to look at the things that matter the most to help you survive rather than caring about the extra things you have access to. Anxiety shouldn’t be something that causes depression, eating disorders, mental problems, suicide, drugs, and etc. This is causing harm to the body from unnecessary stress and worrying. People are forgetting the difference between need and want in life and making something so little mean so much.
I do agree that everyone does have his or her own stressors. They may differ from socioeconomic status but everyone has something going on it their life that they are dealing with or struggling with. Also I don’t think it matters what status you come from I feel everyone copes in similar ways. I don’t think that people with a lot of money cope any different then people who don’t have as much pocket change. There are a lot of things that we do not know about by simply just looking at a person. I feel a lot of people hide their emotions so that they kind of avoid dealing with.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting article comparing anxiety among classes. I think that it is sad that so many people who are severely anxious cannot get the help they need based on their income. They have to live day in and out dealing with what is making them feel anxious or even stuck confronting it every day with out know the right coping mechanisms, which can in turn hurt them more. With so many people turning to drugs and alcohol to numb the anxiety is too high of a number and I think that not very many people know the effects or outcomes of a person who can have an anxiety disorder and I think that people should know.

ReplyDeleteI think that pregnancy can happen just at any socioeconomic status. If there are people living in poverty that can’t afford to ‘feed another mouth’, you would think that they would be smarter about having sex at such a young age. There are many factors that could go into this though. For example, maybe we don’t hear about some pregnancies in the upper class because they have more money to maybe afford an abortion or the use of birth control.
If people in upper class homes have more money, you’d think we would see more pregnancies there because the family can financially support the mother and child. Any daughter can have strict parents, in turn making her rebellious. I wouldn’t say that getting pregnant is a great way of achieving that though. It’s a long term decision and full of a lot of responsibility.
Education plays a big role in the result of teen pregnancy though. A girl needs to know how easy it is to get pregnant and what actions to take in order to prevent it unless she’s fully ready to be a mother, which at that age, is unlikely. If a girl gets pregnant in order for her significant other to “stick around”, that’s unreal. The boy should take responsibility; however, he understands the huge responsibility at hand. It’s unfortunate we only hear about “women getting pregnant”, rather than who helped, you know?
by : Darius Holmes. I feel that anxiety effects us all and its something we cant escape due to the type of world we live in and what we go through but we should take everything easy
